Events, Fundraising, Supporters, The Big Walk

17 October was a busy day for the Scaffidi Foundation! An early drive down to the Mornington Peninsula was our first port of call. Greg Hunt, Federal MP for Flinders, kindly offered to take Clare, Richard (the Scaffidi Foundation’s BIG WALKERS) and Neil (from the Foundation) on a two hour walk to share his knowledge on the ups and downs of long distance fundraising walks. Greg has completed two 500k walks to help raise funds towards finding a cure for type 1 juvenile diabetes.

Greg shed an entirely new light on the situation, giving us many ideas and hints for planning – and executing – THE BIG WALK. The essential brand of blister packs to use, tips on diet, the importance of ‘The Mothership’ (their term for a support vehicle), important signage, school visits and involvement, mascot use and numerous other gems of information were shared with us along the way.

We left Greg’s house early in the afternoon with a box of first aid materials, waterproof clothing and protective sports equipment to help us with our preparation. We also received a great package of information from Greg’s office to help us to plan our event. It is such an enormous help to have this source of knowledge at our fingertips and we can’t thank Greg enough for his great generosity and for spending time with us.

We will be keeping in touch with Greg and his office team who may be able to help out with some surprise walking partners en route. There was also talk of a potential ‘Honourable’ greeting when we reach Canberra… watch this space!

Shortly after meeting Jess, Angela from the Scaffidi Foundation made a deal with her; if she was brave enough to go through with her treatment, Angela would dye her hair hot pink, Jess’ favourite colour.
